W-F wrestlers second at Akeys
Only Stratford stood in the way of the Weyauwega-Fremont wrestling team winning its first Akey Duals championship since 2004.
The Indians finished 4-1 Saturday, Dec. 10, at the six-team tournament, with their only loss coming to the Tigers, 59-12.
W-F also fell to Bonduel 44-25 Thursday, Dec. 8, in a rematch of last season's top two teams in the Central Wisconsin Conference.
Akey Duals
WEYAUWEGA - W-F defeated Ripon 69-10, Fox Valley Lutheran 57-16, Chilton 42-39 and Waupaca 48-33.
"It was a great team effort for our wrestlers," coach Tim Potratz said. "We only had two champions and three second-place wrestlers in the tournament, but still finished with four wins in five duals. We had a lot of kids step up and win big matches for us today.
"We wrestled the first three duals without two seniors who were taking their ACT test and wrestled the last two duals without two injured wrestlers," he added. "A second-place finish while forfeiting three weight classes in each dual was a great accomplishment for the team."
Jared Gruetzmacher (138 pounds) and Jackson Stearns (195) went undefeated.
"Gruetzmacher battled through a tough weight class to win his title and Stearns used three wins by pin to earn his first varsity tournament gold medal," Potratz said.
Seconds for W-F went to freshman Kaleb Sciborski (120), junior Tre Blohm (132) and senior Allen Bentle (285), while freshman Oliver Radtke (113) and sophomore Brandon Loehrke (160) placed third.
Junior Trevor Potratz won his first two matches before being injured in his third match and did not finish the day. Freshman Andy Bork won his first varsity match at 220 and also picked up two forfeit wins. Junior Isaac Danke had two wins, including a big win by pin over Waupaca that helped seal the win for W-F in that dual. Nick Thomas also contributed two wins at 126.
Bonduel 44, W-F 25
BONDUEL - Bonduel came out on top in a meet that historically has determined the Central Wisconsin Conference champion.
Winners included Radtke (113), Sciborski (120), Gruetzmacher (138), Potratz (145) and Bentle (285). Radtke pinned Travis Wollenberg in 1:13, Sciborski picked up a 15-11 win over Daykota Spaulding, Gruetzmacher pinned Dan Tauchen in 4:24; Potratz pinned Kyle Godin in 1:56 and Allen Bentle picked up a 13-4 major decision over Drew Wudtke.
"Bonduel and W-F shared the conference crown last season, but Bonduel has the upper hand this year with their win," Potratz said. "It was a closely contested dual despite the final score. Bonduel won nine of the 14 matches. We had a couple of chances pull off wins in close matches, but could not finish them off."
The Indians are now 5-2 in dual meets and will host the sixth-ranked Campbellsport Cougars at 7 tonight (Thursday, Dec. 15) for a nonconference dual meet.
