Wolf River still producing a variety of fish
With water temperatures hovering around the 45 degree mark most anglers on the Wolf River have switched their focus to walleyes. Larger northern pike have put on the feed bag and are common catches in the main river right now. Smallmouth bass and crappie are still the primary fish being caught in terms of sheer numbers.
Observations
Walleye anglers had a better time early last week with a lull in the action Friday and Saturday. Signs of hope returned by Sunday for the few walleye anglers who braved the rain.
River levels in the past week have fallen to below the 2.5 foot mark on the USGS gauge at New London.
Crappie are still king
Crappie fishermen are still catching good numbers of fish both in the main river and in the back waters. Size is border line for cleaning but a good effort put forth on the water will almost always produce a good enough batch worth keeping.
Tips for walleye
Concentrate on the channel edges and flats. While it is getting close to that time of year to target deep holes, it's still a bit early to spend a lot of time in the deep. Schools of walleye are still on the move so stay mobile and hit the flats where hungry walleye are hunting for food.
