Wolves compete at Black River Falls Invite
The Wolves wrestling team competed at the Black River Falls Invite on Saturday, Dec. 3.
Jacob Frenche wrestled at 132 pounds but had two rough matches and was pinned twice.
Christian Bertram wrestled at 138 pounds and took fourth place, going 2-2 in four matches.
Garret Griffin took third place at 152 pounds, winning 3 matches and losing one.
Joe Vande Vrede placed second at 182 pounds, winning two of his three matches.
Casey Johnson took first place at 195 pounds, earning three victories-all by pin.
Cody Wildenbug wrestled twice but lost both matches at 285 pounds.
"Black River Falls was a new tournament for the Manawa Wolves this year. With the longer travel to the tournament, we decided to go over Friday night and stay in a hotel in Black River Falls. Large thanks to Mary Griffin and the Youth Wrestling Club for coordinating and paying for the hotels. This was a great experience for our athletes to see some new wrestlers and get to bond with their teammates and build team unity. Although we were short handed with only six wrestlers, four of them placed in the tournament," said Coach John Peterson. "Casey Johnson was a first place finisher, his first ever in high school. This was very emotional with losing his grandfather earlier in the week. Joe VandeVrede was a second place finisher making his first ever finals appearance as a Manawa Wolf. Garret Griffin bounced back to take third after having a very tough semi-finals match against Cashton's Dillon Flock (a three time state qualifier). Christian Bertram took fourth place getting back into the swing of wrestling after taking a year off. The other two wrestlers on the team, Jacob Frenche and Cody Wildenberg, each had hard fought matches and came away with a lot of new experiences since they are both new to the sport."
