Wolves fall to Chargers
Illness and fatigue plagued the Lady Wolves on Tuesday, Sept. 27, when they traveled to Wittenberg-Birnamwood to face off against the Chargers who are undefeated in the CWC-8. A few of the Wolves' key players were feeling under-the-weather and, playing against a very high caliber team, Manawa's netters were never able to get into a fluid rhythm on the volleyball court.
The Chargers started out strong from the very beginning of the first set. Before the Wolves could earn a side out, W-B put 6 points on the board. It wasn't until the score was 12-3 in the Chargers favor before Manawa was able to earn an offensive point, which was an ace serve by Kim Retzke. Torrie Dean tried to get her team back into the game by serving 4 points in a row, followed by Krista Braun, also serving 4, to bring the Wolves within 5, 20-15. That would be the closest the Wolves would get, on their side out W-B finished the set, 25-15.
In set number two, Wittenberg put together two very impressive offensive sets. On their second rotation they scored 11 points and on the next rotation they scored 7. With these long rallies, the Chargers took the second set easily, 25-7.
Early in the finally set of the night the Wolves kept the game close. They even brought the score within 2 at 7-5 with another ace serve by Retzke. As the game progressed the Chargers slowly started to pull away, putting 3 or 4 points on the board with each of their servers. The match ended with a final set score of 25-12.
With 8 kills, Kali Draeger was the once again the point leader for her team. With her 2 aces and one solo block, Retzke contributed 3 points and Aimee Drath had 2 kills also. Drath also led her team in digs with 15, followed by Megan O'Brien who had 10. Braun was the assist leader with 8 and Dean (5-5), O'Brien (4-4), and Paige Schernecker (1-1) were all 100% from the line.
