Swimmers wrap up successful summer

The Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbird swim team concluded its summer season July 31 with an open meet at the Iola-Scandinavia Community Fitness & Aquatic Center.

A team banquet and awards presentation followed the meet.

“This is a nice way to end our summer season,” coach Dick Wright said. “Our kids get one more chance to swim and we get nice family and community participation. All our coaches swim, as do many parents, relatives and other townspeople.”

Each swimmer received a certificate and photos from the season at the awards banquet. Special award winners include:

? Newcomer of the Year: Alex Breed and Sara Breed.

? Hardest Worker: Eli Stevens and Abi Stevens (11 and under); Zach Shulfer and Kierstan Leaf (12 and over).

? Most Improved: Matthew Glodowski and Katherine Leaf (11 and under); Jakob Struble, Ben Gutschow and Jessica Faldet (12 and over).

? Most Outstanding: Marcus Glodowski and Jessica Gutschow (11 and under); John Faldet and Teresa Sprangers (12 and over).

“We had a terrific season this summer,” Wright said. “We won the Medford and Wittenberg invitationals, finished second out of 18 teams at Green Bay and won all our home meets. Our kids worked really hard and we had a huge improvement in times.”

The competitive team for boys and girls ages 5-18 had 47 participants this summer.

The team’s winter season will begin Nov. 29 and last until the end of January. The winter team has had about 60 swimmers the past four years.
