Hohn leads Truckers at Appleton invite

Sophomore Samantha Hohn finished eighth overall with a time of 16:45 at the Appleton West Invite at Pierce Park on Aug. 27. The top ten runners were awarded medals.

“Hohn’s finish shows excellent early season fitness. Nine of 12 teams at the invite were Division I, so her performance bids well for future success this season,” said Coach Jeff Crumbaugh. “She ran a smart race, starting conservatively and then moving up into eighth place during the last half mile.”

Two freshman ran superb races in their varsity cross country debut. Sara Messner finished 26th overall (17:27) and Ann Huber crossed the line in 62nd (19:04).

“Both of our freshman girls exceeded expectations. Both girls ran with the confidence you would expect from a Junior or Senior. Both are hard working athletes and their results demonstrated that,” stated Crumbaugh.

Messner and Huber were followed by Kathryn Henschel (69th, 19:53) and Holly Mayek (75th, 20:26). Junior Varsity girls were led by sophomore Traylee Schultz (23:17) and Liz Aceto (24:03). The boys were led by Xavier Fletcher who went out fast with a 5:22 mile but then pulled back on the hilly 5,000 meter course to finish 29th (18:37). Sophomore Jacob DeCleene also broke 19 minutes in his best career time (41st, 18:56). They were followed by Kyle Wied (50th, 19:16), Garrett Cunningham (71st, 21:46) and Kaleb Krueger (75th, 22:57), and Gage Calkins (77th, 23:07). Junior Varsity runner Brandon Scheller covered the course in 23:38.
