T-Birds run out of gas

BONDUEL – Bonduel scored 20 unanswered points in the second half and went on to a 34-7 Central Wisconsin 8 Conference football win Friday over Iola-Scandinavia.

Bonduel quarterback Spencer Froeming opened the scoring with a 2-yard run in the second quarter, but the Thunderbirds’ Devin Peterson tied the game with a 53-yard run. Froeming added another 5-yard touchdown run to give the Bears a 14-7 halftime lead.

Ben Tauchen gave Bonduel the lead for good with a 10-yard run in the third quarter and Froeming connected on a 34-yard pass to Cullin Kowalczyk and a 12-yarder to Tauchen to cap the scoring.

“We actually played pretty well in the first half, but we ran out of gas,” coach Scott Erickson said. “That was the key factor in the game. WE had the ball inside the 10 two times and didn’t score.”

Friday’s game was the first action for a handful of T-Birds that were suspended for the first two games.

“It looked like we were playing our first game and for some of our guys, they were,” Erickson said.

Peterson picked up 78 of the T-Birds 124 rushing yards on 11 carries. The Bears, who improved to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in CWC 8 play, outgained I-S 319-165. The T-Birds fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

I-S will host Wittenberg-Birnamwood at 7 p.m. Friday at Thunderbird Field in Scandinavia.

“We’ll have to go out, do what we do best and hopefully capitalize on our strengths and their weaknesses,” Erickson said.
