More parking considered for library

More parking for the Sturm Memorial Library was discussed by the Manawa Common Council at a committe-of-the-whole meeting Sept. 20.

Alderwoman Deb Nolan noted that the library board was working with Foth engineer Dennis Steigenberger to draw up designs for a 14-spot parking lot. The parking would be located to the rear of the building.

Police Chief David Walker announced he has begun the process to hire two part-time officers to replenish the work force. He is currently working to increase the part-time officer pool.

The council discussed prioritizing community projects. Items considered were building a new shelter house at Lindsay Park, quotes should include an enclosure; replacing the softball fence for $3,500; fixing the city garage roof for $3,000; replacing the “Welcome to Manawa” sign south of the city; feasibility study for a new motel; carpeting and replacing city hall furnace; upgrading the beach and boathouse area; and creating an open space area on Pine Street.

The costs for repairing the dam could be as low as $25,000 or as high as $100,000. The Department of Public Works will request someone from Sea View attend a meeting of the council.

The council discussed the 2011 budget. Various items discussed included dam repair, formation of a lake district, request to increase attorney fees, summer recreation report, wage increases and long-term borrowing.

Each departmental budget was studied for recommendations.
