Winchester speaker explores Civilian Conservation Corps

Mary Schueller will speak about the Great Depression and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Hosted by Winchester Academy, Schueller’s 45-minute PowerPoint presentation is free and open to the public. Coffee and cookies will be served at 6 p.m.

Schueller will describe the conditions of Wisconsin’s natural resources in the 1930s and how the CCC helped develop eight state parks and four Milwaukee County parks.

Her father spent nearly four years in the CCC, which inspired her to pass the story on to the next generation. Schueller’s book The Soldiers of Poverty tells how her father worked as a carpenter to help develop Copper Falls State Park in northern Wisconsin. She will also address local fourth-grade students on Monday.
