Ski team to hold open house Nov. 7

An open house and ski season signup will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at the Iola Winter Sports Club, E398 County Road MM, Iola.

The Iola Winter Sports Club (IWSC) Nordic Ski Team and Learn to Ski program will host the event. Coaches and team members will be present to talk about ski technique and equipment, time commitment and costs.

IWSC developed the Learn to Ski program in 2009 through a grant from the American Birkebeiner Foundation. This program is for children in grades 4-12 interested in learning to cross-country ski, but are not ready to commit to a ski team.

Ski lessons for this group will be held two nights per week for two weeks (scheduling will depend on snow conditions) at the Iola Winter Sports Center. Equipment will be provided and instruction given by qualified adult skiers. There will be a nominal fee for this program. Coaches are available to assist athletes in obtaining the proper equipment.

Call Patty Mork at 715-445-4492.

The Iola Nordic Ski Team has been in existence for 10 years. It is a club team made up of middle school and high school athletes from Iola, Rosholt, Amherst and Stevens Point. Local adult cross-country skiers coach the team, which practices together three days per week at the IWSC cross-country ski trails.

The team competes in six to eight races around north-central Wisconsin, including two races on the IWSC home course, and in the Wisconsin State Cross Country Ski Championships at Nine Mile Forest in Wausau. Skiers compete in classic and skating technique.
