Manawa School District approves final budget

An $8.7 million budget was approved by the Manawa School Board at its Oct. 25 meeting.

The 2010-11 school district budget reflects an increase of $474,930, a 5.42 percent increase over last year’s final budget. The tax levy is $9.81 per $1,000 of equalized value, which is a $0.07 increase over last year.

School board election

The board positions of Paul Kons and Todd Welch are up reelection in 2011. Kons represents Zone 4, the town of St. Lawrence and village of Ogdensburg, and Welch represents Zone 3, the townships of Helvetia and Union.

District community members interested in running for candidacy can pick up forms in the district office. Filing for office will take place Dec. 1, 2010, through Jan. 4, 2011.

WKCE testing

Students and staff were pleased with the Manawa Masonic Center as the site for the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exams (WKCE). Monday began with the first of eight days of testing and students transitioned well with the accommodations.

“The students were able to concentrate better without the distractions of all the activity going on throughout the school,” stated high school/middle school principal Troy White. “The Lodge was a wonderful alternative to testing within our building.”

The Masonic Lodge was recommended as the test site by board member Corinne Zielke.

The district is looking forward to seeing the impact on scores with testing in an offsite location.

Veterans Day program

The district will hold its annual Veteran’s Day Program at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Little Wolf Senior and Junior High School. Everyone is welcome to attend.
