VFW looking for members

The Iola-Scandinavia Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9748 is looking for a few good men – and women. Anyone who served in combat from World War II to Afghanistan is invited to join the local organization.

The number of Iola-Scandinavia active VFW members is quickly diminishing. Post membership has dwindled to the point that it may have to close its doors. In the past, the organization has accomplished much for the community, including scholarships for local high school graduates, funds for needy organizations and care packages for U.S. fighting forces.

The recent passing of four heroic members – Palmer Myhra, Hyde Murray, Loren Cracker and Bud Newby – is a reminder that time is subtlety turning its pages. An era that produced this country’s greatest generation is sadly nearing an end. These heroes fought bravely and unselfishly so that we at home could continue our envied way of life. Their loss was a great one to us all. But the important contributions of the VFW needs to continue, both as a testament to their sacrifice and as a boon to our community.

Thus, VFW Post 9748 is extending an invitation to all war veterans to become part of an organization that proudly supports the needs of worthy individuals and organizations. Sit next to your brothers and sisters in arms, share in their camaraderie and serve a great cause.

Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the last Monday of every month at Iola Living Assistance, 185 S. Chet Krause Drive, Iola.
