Indians come up short in first game

The home court advantage wasn’t much of an advantage for the Weyauwega-Fremont boys’ basketball team in its season opener.

The Indians hosted Wautoma Monday, Nov. 29, and came out on the short end of a 52-40 score.

W-F held the Hornets to nine points in each of the second, third and fourth quarters, but the Indians’ 25-10 deficit heading into the second period was too much to overcome.

“That first quarter, it was, ‘Oh, this is what he’s talking about,'” coach Mike Flanagan said. “I thought we progressed as the game went on and got a little more comfortable with what we were doing and weren’t so intimidated.”

The Hornets led 34-20 at halftime and 43-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

“We had a couple of opportunities to get a loose ball, but we’re not quite there,” Flanagan said. “They don’t understand the intensity, the quickness and the strength of the varsity level, but they probably understand it now.”

W-F’s Kyle Loughrin led all players with 15 points, while Johnny Eagan and Doug Clark scored 13 points each to lead Wautoma.

Loughrin, a senior, will be one of the key players on a team that advanced to a Division 3 sectional semifinal last season.

“He can’t do it all and we have to find some other people to help him out,” Flanagan said. “I think we found some people tonight.”

Juniors Calvin Swanson, Jonas Kobiske and Wes Alix and sophomore Tanner Ross joined Loughrin in the starting lineup for the opener.

“It hurts us that we don’t have more experience, but hopefully, these kids will learn quickly and become a force somewhere down the line,” Flanagan said.

He expects Amherst, who ended the Indians’ string of 10 straight conference championships last season, to be the top team in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference this season.

“I’d say Amherst is No. 1,” he said. “They have the most coming back and the most experience and (coach) Gregg (Jensen) does an excellent job. Not far behind is a team like Bonduel. You don’t hear much about them, but they have a nice system going up there now. (Stevens Point) Pacelli’s going to be very competitive, Wittenberg’s going to be better and Iola has some experience coming back and some size. It should be an interesting race.”

Jeff Gast is coaching the junior varsity team this season, while James Thorpe is working with the C Team.

Flanagan’s team is young and inexperienced, but the players are willing to learn, he said.

“As a coach, I can’t get on them as much as a senior group that knew some things,” he said. “We have to do a lot of teaching as we go along and remind them of things. It’s their willingness to work through that.”

Flanagan looks for improvement once the Indians get a couple of games under their belt.

“One of our goals is to get better with every game and every time we step on the floor for practice,” he said. “Over a season, that becomes much better.”
