Waupaca falls in championship game to Bulldogs

New London showed why it has one of the area’s top girls’ basketball teams by winning the Waupaca Invitational.

The Bulldogs handed Waupaca a 56-30 loss Saturday, Nov. 27, in the championship game of the tournament that also included Antigo and Merrill.

The loss came a day after the Comets opened the season with a 56-49 win over Antigo.

Waupaca took a 9-6 lead into the second quarter, but New London outscored the Comets 50-21 the rest of the way.

Kristen Fuss led Waupaca with 10 points, while Tara Knapstein led New London with 13.

The teams entered the second quarter tied at 10-10, but Waupaca outscored the Red Robins 15-10 in the second quarter and 13-6 in the third period.

Alta Littrel and Ashlie Hoffman led Waupaca with 12 points each, while Abbey Lazers added 10.

Coach Brandon Temperly is in his third season with the Comets.

“We’re further along then we’ve been in my previous two years,” he said. “That helps. The kids are getting used to me.”

Returning players include Fuss, a senior who was a second-team all-conference pick last season.

“She put in a lot of work this summer and we’re looking for big things out of her in scoring, defense, rebounding and overall team leadership,” Temperly said. “She’s embraced that role (as a team leader) and the kids really respond to her.”

The roster also includes junior post players Hoffman and Lexie Marringa, but Marringa went down with a knee injury in the New London game.

“They work really well together,” Temperly said. “Lexie’s a strong player and likes to finish inside, where Ashlie can finesse you. It really works well with our offense. We’re pretty good offensively. We know how to put the ball in the basket. We have to get a little better at taking care of the ball.”

Also back are junior guards Lazers and Katie Barlow.

“Katie’s defense is very, very good and Abbey can put the ball in the hole,” Temperly said.

The Comets lost a number of players from last season, including Zoey Brooks and Shannon Conlin.

“Our bench play is going to be a question,” Temperly said. “I’m looking for girls that are able to step up that are able to fill those roles and play them well.”

He expects Freedom to contend for an Eastern Valley Conference title this season.

“Freedom’s the team to beat until somebody knocks them off,” he said. “They’ll be good again this year. Once again, it’s going to be a battle and there are no gimmies on the schedule. I see us competing well in this league this year.”
