The season is under way for Waupaca High School’s varsity and junior varsity curling teams.
The boys’ and girls’ varsity teams picked up wins Thursday, Dec. 2, over D.C. Everest at the Waupaca Curling Club. The girls edged the Evergreens 7-6, while the boys picked up an 11-2 victory.
The girls scored two in the seventh end, stole a point in the eighth end to force the extra end and managed to squeak out a victory by also steeling a point in the ninth end.
“Cydney Pufahl had a great game after a substitution forced her to take over as the vice skip,” coach Jason Smith said. “We got a good break on Missy Hescke’s last shot in the ninth end, which turned out to be the winning stone.”
Meanwhile, Zach Waitrovich skipped the Comet boys to their win in the home opener.
In JV action, the boys defeated Everest 9-5 and the girls fell 6-2.
Waupaca opened its season Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Stevens Point. The girls defeated the Panthers 9-6 and the boys won 7-5.
After trailing 4-0 early, the Comet girls rallied to tie the score at 4-4 in the fourth end. Stevens Point retook the lead in the sixth after their skip made a draw for a second point.
“Hannah Johnson, the Waupaca skip, made a fantastic takeout through a small port to score three points in the 7th end,” Smith said. “Stevens Point was unable to answer in the eighth.”
The boys needed an extra end to defeat the Panthers.
The Comets hosted Wausau West Tuesday, Dec. 7, and will travel to Marshfield today (Thursday, Dec. 9) for a 3 p.m. match.
