Comet girls fall at home

A 21-5 advantage in free-throw attempts helped Plymouth hand Waupaca a 49-48 defeat Tuesday, Dec. 14, in a nonconference girls’ basketball game in Waupaca.

The Panthers outscored the Comets 17-8 in the first quarter and led 28-21 at halftime. Waupaca trailed by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, but closed the period with a 7-1 run to trail 35-30 heading into the final period.

Waupaca took its first lead with 1:47 to go in the game on an Abbey Lazers three-pointer to go up 43-42, but Plymouth’s Rachel Cecka answered with a basket of her own and the Panthers never trailed again.

Lazers led Waupaca with 12 points, while Kristen Fuss added nine and Ashlie Hoffman and Mikaila Johnson chipped in with eight each.

Waupaca returned to Eastern Valley Conference play Tuesday, Dec. 21, against Berlin and will host Nekoosa at 6 tonight (Thursday).
