Boys’ curling team remains undefeated

The Waupaca High School boys’ varsity curling team has started the 2010-11 season with 10 straight wins.

Waupaca defeated Portage 9-4 Friday, Jan. 7, at the Waupaca Curling Club. The team consists of Zach Waitrovich, Ryan Johnston, Dan Wasrud, Austin Schroeder and Jacob Overman.

“With an undefeated season so far, the boys should be awarded the top seed at the Wisconsin State High School Curling Championships Feb. 18-19 in Medford,” coach Jason Smith said.

Other results from Jan. 7 include Portage varsity girls 6, Waupaca 5 (Waupaca 4-3 overall), Portage junior varsity boys 8, Waupaca 4 (Waupaca 6-1 overall) and Portage JV girls 6, Waupaca 4 (Waupaca 1-7 overall).

The varsity teams competed in Medford Tuesday, Jan. 11, and will head to Wausau Friday, Jan. 14, for the 56th annual Wausau High School Bonspiel at the Wausau Curling Club.

Waitrovich will skip the boys team, while Hannah Johnson will skip the girls’ squad. The boys’ first two games are at 8 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. and the girls’ first two games are at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The Wausau Curling Club and is located at Marathon Park.

The Waupaca Curling Club will host eight elite men’s teams from around the United States Jan. 20-23 for a tournament to determine the final three spots at the U.S. Nationals.

Matches will be held at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the schedule is subject to revisions.

Spectators are encouraged to come and watch what could be the United States next National and/or Olympic teams compete.
