Lady T-Birds fall to Royals, Bears, Tigers

A pair of scoreless quarters added up to a nonconference loss for the Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team.

The Thunderbirds dropped a 37-13 decision Saturday, Jan. 8, to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and also fell to Bonduel Thursday, Jan. 6, and Tigerton Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Assumption 37, I-S 13

The Royals held the T-Birds scoreless in the second and fourth quarters.

Assumption led 12-6 after one quarter, 21-6 at halftime and 29-13 after three quarters.

Neither team shot the ball well. The T-Birds converted six of 30 shots, made only one of 14 free throws and also turned the ball over 25 times. Assumption hit 11 of 35 shots and finished with 17 steals.

The Royals held a slim 33-31 advantage in rebounds. Morgan Oppor led the T-Birds with seven boards, while Mary Marx added five.

Bonduel 47, I-S 38

The Bears outscored the T-Birds 21-10 in the first quarter, led 33-18 at halftime and took a 41-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

The T-Birds hit five of 13 three-pointers, outrebounded the Bears 37-32 and had nine steals.

Elle Maus and Oppor led I-S with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Oppor and Lidia Frias shared rebounding honors with eight each, while Amanda Aanstad added six. Krista Mortenson had three steals and three assists, while Oppor added three steals.

Katie Woldt had the hot hand for Bonduel with a game-high 25 points.

Tigerton 33, I-S 16

Scoring points was a problem again for the T-Birds in a nonconference home loss to the Tigers.

Each team scored three points in the first quarter, but Tigerton took control of the game with a 15-2 advantage in the second period to take an 18-5 halftime lead.

The T-Birds cut into the lead by outscoring the Tigers 9-5 in the third quarter, but the visitors outscored I-S 10-2 over the final eight minutes.

Oppor led the T-Birds with eight points, five steals and four rebounds, while Karina Welch added four points.

The T-Birds returned Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Wittenberg-Birnamwood and will host Stevens Point Pacelli at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14.
