T-Bird girls get first win

The winning streak didn’t last very long.

Three days after picking up their first win of the season with a victory over Stevens Point Pacelli, the Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team dropped a 39-20 nonconference decision Monday, Jan. 17, in Stratford.

The T-Birds also fell to Wittenberg-Birnamwood Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Stratford 39, I-S 20

STRATFORD – The Tigers held the T-Birds scoreless in the first quarter and led 23-3 at halftime.

Stratford took a 30-8 lead into the fourth quarter and the T-Bird outscored the home team 12-9 over the final eight minutes.

I-S turned the ball over 32 times in the game.

Elle Maus led the T-Birds with nine points. Amanda Aanstad led the way in rebounding with seven, while Maus and Morgan Oppor added six each.

I-S 39, Pacelli 29

Both teams came into the Friday, Jan. 14, game looking for their first Central Wisconsin 8 Conference win.

The T-Birds outscored the Cardinals 12-2 in the first quarter and led 19-11 at halftime. Both teams scored 10 points in the third quarter and I-S had a 10-8 advantage in the fourth.

Mary Marx led the T-Birds with 11 points, while Lidia Frias added eight rebounds and seven points.

W-B 43, I-S 30

WITTENBERG – Turnovers hurt the T-Birds chances, as I-S gave the ball back to the Chargers 32 times.

Both teams struggled early, as I-S led 4-2 after one quarter. The Chargers outscored the T-Birds 16-8 in the second quarter to take a 18-12 halftime lead. W-B also outscored the T-Birds 10-8 in the third quarter and 15-10 in the fourth.

Marx led the T-Birds with eight points, while Frias and Paige Berg chipped in with 10 and eight rebounds, respectively.

The T-Birds will travel to Shiocton Friday, Jan. 21, for a 7:30 p.m. conference matchup with the Chiefs before hosting Amherst Tuesday, Jan. 25.
