No contested races in Iola

There will be no contested Iola village trustee positions in the spring election.

At the village caucus held Jan. 10, all three incumbents – Betty Finch, Leland Johnson and Jim Rasmussen – were nominated as candidates for the trustee positions up for election. All three accepted the nominations.

Village President Joel Edler also accepted a nomination to run again.

At the regular meeting, the board discussed a water main break. It was noted that repair crews dug a huge hole on State Street, right in front of Vidar of Iola.

Iola-Scandinavia Area Chamber of Commerce representative Tammie Jo Berg reported there is a vintage snowmobile gathering Jan. 22. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Lake Iola.

She also reported the Winter Carnival Ice Sculpture Contest has a new location. The Feb. 5 event will be held next to Vidar, instead of at Legion Park and at Iola-Scandinavia High School.

Police report

In a report to the village board, the Iola Police Department indicated there were 103 calls for activity logged in December 2010. This is up 3 percent from the 100 calls logged in December 2009 and up 1.98 percent from the 101 calls logged in November 2010.
