Blue and Gold Banquet

Cub Scout Pack 3249 out of Sugar Bush Elementary School are fortunate to have energetic parents and volunteers who put on an outstanding Blue and Gold Banquet Feb. 22, celebrating 101 years of Boy Scouting. A chicken dinner prepared by Pine Tree Supper Club and birthday cake for dessert started off the banquet.

An after dinner show by the Scouts entertained the crowd with short skits and knock-knock jokes, along with one liners.

Achievements were handed out to deserving Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos. Besides working hard to achieve their ranking patches for each den level, Pack 3249 obtained the following awards by working through the year and staying focused on their goals:

Cub Scout World Conservation Award

The Wolf Cubs had to complete Achievement 7 (Your Living World) which had them learn about recycling, pollution, ways to save energy and picking up litter in their neighborhood. They also completed Elective 13 (Birds) by watching birds for one week, putting out nesting material, reading a book about birds, identifying 10 different birds, feeding birds and putting out a bird house. They completed Elective 19 (Fishing) by identifying five different fish, rigging a pole properly, learning the rules of safe fishing and local fishing laws, showing how to use a pole and going fishing (trip to Wilderness Springs Trout Farm). Lastly they had to complete a conservation service project in which they built recycled bird feeders out of two-liter soda bottles.

All 10 Wolf Cubs from Pack 3249 earned this award: Sam Olsen, Myles O’Brien, Michael Gray, Jordan Haas, Zackary Jones, Billy Freeman, Brett Krake, Collin Shepard, Silas Christen and Justin Ernst.

Scout Sunday Patch

Boys attended church in their uniform on Sunday, Feb. 6 (Scout Sunday). This is the day that scouts and leaders all across the country attend church services in their uniforms as part of their duty to God and to raise awareness of the scouting program each year. Scout Sunday patch recipients: Jordan Bruette, Ben Olsen, Cody Casey, Brett Krake, Billy Freeman, Myles O’Brien, Jordan Haas, Sam Olsen, Triton Crain, and Cameron Wegener.

Religious Emblems of Faith

Some Webelos scouts earned their Religious Emblems of Faith Award. They and their families worked hard on this over the past couple of months. This award is specific to their religious denomination. “God & Family” was earned by Ben Olsen and Connor Weber; “Parvuli Dei” was earned by Jordan Bruette.

2010 Centennial Quality Unit Award

All active scouts and leaders from Cub Scout Pack 3249 received this prestigious award. Criteria for this award included membership retention, number of scouts that earned their ranks, providing a summertime activities program, leaders trained for their positions, and the number of parent volunteers. This is a cumulative award in that it looks at your current year’s numbers as well as the previous year’s numbers. Not all packs are able to earn this award. This is quite an honor.

Wrapping things up

A fun-filled paddle auction brought the evening to a close, and over $500 was raised to support summer outings. Event organizer, auctioneer and mother of a scout, Shannon O’Brien was thankful to all the businesses in the New London area who gave items for the auction and donated items to defray costs to the scouts. Special recognition goes to SaveHalf Card Store, Family Video, Janet’s Custom Design, Pine Tree Supper Club, Half Nelson’s, London Jewelers Inc. , Nails & Spa, New London Grand Cinema, Karate America New London, New London Community Pool, AmericInn & Suites, Century 21 Olympia, C&B Rental, Festival Foods, Sugar Bush School & PTO and New London Walmart.
