Waupaca splits EVC soccer games

Berlin stayed unbeaten in Eastern Valley Conference girls’ soccer play with a 3-1 win Thursday, April 28, over Waupaca.\

The Comets also handed Clintonville a 4-2 defeat Tuesday, April 26.

Berlin 3, Waupaca 1

WAUPACA – Lizzie Hanke scored for Waupaca two minutes into the game off of an assist from Kirsten Fehrman, but that turned out to be the Comets’ only goal of the game.

Mariah Moe tied the game for Berlin at the 17-minute mark and the Indians added goals from Breanna Polk later in the first half and from Moe with eight minutes left in the game.

The Indians outshot the Comets 14-9. Waupaca goalie Mikaila Johnson finished with 11 saves.

Waupaca 4, Clintonville 2

CLINTONVILLE – Suzie Groeschel scored twice for the Comets in a win over the Truckers.

Fehrman put Waupaca on the board four minutes into the game with an unassisted goal. She won the ball 25 yards from the Clintonville goal and fired a left-footed shot that bent into the near post.

Clintonville tied the game with nine minutes to go in the first half, but Groeschel came up with two goals in a two-minute stretch before halftime.

Hanke drew attention on the dribble and found a wide open Groeschel making a run from the right wing. Groeschel scored her second goal off of an assist from Hannah Butkiewicz.

Butkiewicz added an unassisted goal in the second half.

“There was 3 to 4 inches of standing water on most of the field,” coach Mark Polebitski said. “The conditions eliminated the short passing game. It was a matter of going hard to the ball and not trying to do anything fancy. It was an ugly win, but that’s the way it goes.”

Waupaca outshot the Truckers 18-6 and Johnson made four saves.
