App’s painting chosen for cover

For the second time in nine months, an original oil painting by Ogdensburg artist, Marie App, has been accepted for publication on a national magazine cover.

Her painting, “Honeybee Swarm,” is the May 2011 cover of Bee Culture, the Magazine of American Beekeeping, published in Medina, Ohio.

“The beekeeping theme of bee swarms caught my interest, and after doing some research on how a swarm is caught and controlled, I painted two beekeepers in the challenging process of climbing a stepladder to capture a swarm in an oak tree,” App said.

“I emailed an image of my painting to the editor,” App said. “He replied that the timing was perfect because his May issue featured several articles on the skills and techniques of retrieving honeybee swarms.”

The first time App published one of her paintings on the cover of Bee Culture (Sept. 2010), beekeepers from Waupaca and Brown counties and from out of state asked her if prints of the painting were available.

App had a run of prints made for them. She may consider an edition of “Honeybee Swarm” as well,.

The original painting of her first bee painting was purchased by a beekeeper from Green Bay.

The second painting was selected for the New Visions’ 25th Annual Culture and Agriculture Show at the Marshfield Clinic. The exhibit runs from July 11 to Sep. 2.

“It’s the ultimate experience, the rite of passage in beekeeping,” App said.
