Thunderbirds to face Penguins in tourney

Iola-Scandinavia will hit the road Thursday. May 26, for the first round of the state baseball tournament.

The Thunderbirds received a No. 5 seed in Division 3 and will play at 4:30 p.m. at fourth-seeded Plainfield Tri-County. The winner will face top-seeded Weyauwega-Fremont Tuesday, May 31, in Weyauwega in a regional semifinal.

Amherst 9, I-S 6

AMHERST – The T-Birds scored four times in the top of the sixth inning Saturday, May 21, but the rally came up short against the Falcons.

I-S scored twice in the first, but Amherst responded with four in the second, one in the fourth and three in the fifth before the T-Birds closed the gap to 8-6. Amherst tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth.

Brady Huettner had two of the T-Birds’ five hits, while Grant Stenerson drove in three runs. Chris Zblewski led Amherst at the plate with two hits and three RBIs.

D.J. Loken took the loss for the T-Birds.

T-Bird pitchers gave up eight walks in the game and the team also committed three errors.

Amherst 4, I-S 2

IOLA – Spencer Erickson and Nick Wavruk each had a hit for the T-Birds Thursday, May 19, in a loss to Amherst.

Zach Gauerke took the loss on the mound and Willie Doll led Amherst with three hits.

Pacelli 12, I-S 0

IOLA – Stevens Point Pacelli improved to 11-0 in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference by shutting out the T-Birds Tuesday, May 17.

The Cardinals took a 6-0 lead into the sixth inning and sealed the win with a six-run frame.

Pacelli outhit the T-Birds 11-5.

Tanner Korb took the loss on the mound.

Shiocton 2, I-S 1

SHIOCTON – The T-Birds managed only three hits off of the Chiefs Monday, May 16, in the first game of a doubleheader and also committed five errors.

Jon Prahl, Stenerson and Gauerke each had a hit for the T-Birds, with Prahl driving in the team’s run.

Loken took the loss on the mound.

Shiocton 10, I-S 6

Gauerke and Stenerson each had two hits, while Hunter Gruenwald, Erickson, Huettner and Wavruk had one each.

Dylan Olson took the loss on the mound.
