On Wednesday, Sept. 21 the Manawa PTO held the Wolf Walk walk-a-thon to raise money to update technology at the Manawa Elementary School. The fund raiser was a success, as it raised more than $5,000.
Tori Wepner, Manawa PTO president, said this was the first year the PTO has done a walk-a-thon as a fund raiser. She pointed out that it was more than a walk-a-thon.
“We are also using it to bring the school together as a whole and do something together, and incorporating it with some educational factors also,” Wepner said. “We have the gym teacher here. She’s been talking to them about the healthy benefits of walking.”
Along with the benefits of walking being explained to the 4K through sixth graders participating in the Wolf Walk, the learning continued in the classroom after the walk. Wepner said teachers timed how long their classes walked and then translated that to distance to bring a geography aspect to it. Each class was then assigned a city that distance from Manawa.
In addition to the 4K through six grade students taking part in the Wolf Walk, there were also high school students helping with the event. In addition to walking around the track at the Little Wolf High School, there were also soccer and football activities for the kids.
Wepner said the goal of the Wolf Walk was to get parents and the community to get behind something that they believed in.
“They are giving 100 percent of what they are donating to technology to the elementary school,” Wepner said. “It’s a cool way for people to support something they believe in and have 100 percent go to the school.”
