Wolves defeat Thunderbirds

Manawa spoiled Iola-Scandinavia’s Homecoming festivities by coming from behind Friday, Sept. 30, for a 22-20 win over the Thunderbirds in a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference football matchup.
Kenny Dearth threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Wesley Krauss in the game’s final minutes.
Kyler Heimbruch gave Manawa the lead with a 2-yard run in the first quarter, but the T-Birds’s Brady Huetter tied the game with a 10-yard run in the second quarter.
Huetter added a 27-yard TD run in the third quarter, but Heimbruch answered with a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. Dearth ran the ball in for the two-point conversion and the Wolves led 15-14.
The lead didn’t last long, however, as the T-Birds’ Bradly Hardel scored from 13 yards out in the fourth quarter.
Huetter led all rushers with 119 yards on 27 carries, while Dearth and Heimbruch led Manawa with 57 and 55 yards, respectively.
The Wolves outgained the T-Birds 165-140 on the ground and 60-15 through the air.
Manawa improved to 1-4 in the CWC 8 and 3-4 overall, while the T-Birds fell to 4-2 in league play and 4-2 overall. I-S will travel to Amherst Friday, Oct. 7, for a 7 p.m. contest with the Falcons.
