Crawford advances in poster contest

Madison Crawford (left), a seventh grade student at Clintonville Middle School, has taken the first step in becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Clintonville Lions Club.

Crawford’s poster took first place in the competition and will be submitted in the 24th annual worldwide Lions International Peace Poster contest. The poster was selected for its originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme, “Children Know Peace”.

Besides advancing in the international contest, Crawford received a $30 cash award from the Clintonville club for her outstanding poster and will also be their dinner guest at a future club meeting.

Other fifth through seventh grade middle school students in art teacher Diana Rose’s class were honored for their artistic vision of peace. They were seventh grader Erin Wisneski, second place; and fifth grader Allison Graper, third place. The Clintonville club gave cash awards of $20 to the second place winner and $10 to the third place winner.

Clintonville Lions Club contest chairperson Octe Mattson said she was impressed by the expression and creativity of the more than 20 contest entrants. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them,” Mattson said. “I’m proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their vision.”

Mattson said that Crawford will advance to face stiff competition through multiple rounds of judging before one international grand prize and 23 merit winners will be selected.

“Our club is cheering for Madison as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision of peace will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” Mattson said.
