Thunderbird boys fall in overtime

The Iola-Scandinavia boys’ basketball team put up more than 100 points at the Owen-Withee Invitational, but ended up dropping games to Owen-Withee and Stratford.

The Thunderbirds came out on the short end of a 51-50 score Friday, Dec. 30, in overtime against Owen-Withee in the consolation game of the Blackhawks’ tournament in Owen. I-S also fell to Stratford 58-51 Thursday, Dec. 29.

The contest between the T-Birds and Blackhawks came down to the free-throw line in the final seconds in the overtime period, as Dakota Halida hit one of two free throws to snap a 50-50 tie with 10 seconds remaining.

I-S led 12-6 after one quarter and 21-20 at halftime, but the host Blackhawks outscored the T-Birds 10-8 over the next eight minutes to take a 31-30 lead into the fourth quarter. The T-Birds forced overtime with a 17-16 advantage in the fourth quarter, but managed only four points in overtime.

Connor Lodewegen led all scorers with 16 points for the T-Birds, while Zach Gauerke, Jordan Beyersdorf and Bradly Hardel chipped in with eight points each.

Nick Wood and Brandon Bredlau led the Blackhawks with 14 points each.

The T-Birds wrapped up five straight road games Tuesday, Jan. 3, with a nonconference game at Auburndale and will return to Central Wisconsin 8 Conference action Friday, Jan. 6, at home against Manawa. I-S will also head to Weyauwega-Fremont Tuesday, Jan. 10, to take on the Indians in another CWC-8 matchup.
