Promote tourism by preserving the Red Mill

I read the front page article in the County Post about promoting tourism in Waupaca County and the efforts to “devise a brand identity” for such a promotion.

It is my opinion that such efforts are so far off base that I wonder what the heck certain people are thinking. We don’t need joint venture councils like the WCVPC and the WCEDC spending tens of thousands of dollars to get together over steak dinners and banter about weird ideas. What we need is to preserve our treasured sites that have always attracted people to our area. I would propose that the Red Mill is one of those sites that needs preservation. The place seems to be falling apart, much to my dismay.

I would like to see just one dedicated individual, one who knows how to navigate all the various levels of government, to help us save the place. We don’t need more committees, we need volunteers who are willing to stand up, speak out and lend a hand in passing on something that has made the Waupaca area a very memorable place to visit for several generations.

Someone out there must know how to get a grant for saving a historical site. I would certainly be one of the first to stand up and give them applause for their efforts, and I would be willing to contribute some elbow grease. I’m betting there are lots of others out there who would also help.
