How plants may clean groundwater

Winchester Academy will present a program on phytoremediation at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Mark Dawson, an environmental engineer with Sand Creek Consultants in Amherst, will discuss how plants can rejuvenate contaminated soil and groundwater.

Farm chemicals and industrial solvents can leach from landfills into the groundwater, causing wells on neighboring properties to become unsafe for drinking water. Dawson has conducted research on how planting trees downgradient of a contaminated site can help remove the chemicals from the groundwater.

The program is free and open to the public. Dawson’s presentation will be preceded by coffee and refreshments at 6 p.m.
