Police offer concealed carry training

The New London Police Department will host a carrying concealed weapons class from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Washington Center, 600 W. Washington St.

The course is sanctioned by the Wisconsin Department of Justice and covers all legal aspects in the use of deadly force, as well as weapons safety, handling and storage. Upon completion of training, participants will receive a proof of training certificate that will assist in applying for a concealed carry permit in Wisconsin.

Assistant Chief Jay Zempel of the New London Police Department is the instructor. He has over 33 years of law enforcement experience and is designated as a master instructor in firearms by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

Zempel is currently the senior firearms instructor at the Fox Valley Technical College’s Police Academy, and has personally trained thousands of law enforcement officers over the last 26 years.

Cost for the course is $50 for city of New London residents, $75 for non-residents and $25 for employees of the city of New London.

Those interested in attending the course can pre-register at the New London Police Dept. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until April 9. Payment is due at that time. All hand outs and course material is included in the registration price.

No handguns are allowed at the training site.
