T-Birds knock off Blackhawks in opener

It didn’t take long for the Iola-Scandinavia baseball team to get into the win column.

The Thunderbirds opened the season Tuesday, March 27, with a 9-2 nonconference win over Port Edwards on the Blackhawks’ home field.

I-S took an 8-0 into the bottom of the fourth inning after scoring twice in the first and third frames, three times in the second and once in the fourth.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Zach Gauerke held the Blackhawks hitless over the first three innings. He ended up giving up one hit and a walk and struck out four batters over four innings. Reliever D.J. Loken also struck out four batters in relief while going 3×3 at the plate.

The T-Birds will open Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at Taylor Field against Bonduel.
