Bonduel scores early, often against I-S

Iola-Scandinavia put 10 runs on the board, but still came up short against Bonduel in a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference softball matchup.

The Bears scored nine runs in the first two innings Thursday, April 5, and went on to hand the Thunderbirds a 15-10 defeat.

The teams combined for 16 runs in the first two innings. The Bears had 15 hits, including six doubles and two home runs.

After Bonduel took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, I-S responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Kiara Boutwell and Brooke Phillips singled. Boutwell scored on a passed ball and Phillips scored on an Elle Maus sacrifice fly to cut the Bonduel lead to 3-2.

Bonduel added six more runs in the second, but the T-Birds scored five runs with the help of five walks in a row to make the score 9-7. Jane Oligney doubled in the inning to score two runs.

After holding the Bears scoreless in the third inning, the T-Birds made the score 9-8, as Kylie Johnson singled and scored on a double by Phillips.

Bonduel scored four more runs in the fourth inning to put the game away. I-S could manage only one more run in the fourth and fifth innings. Johnson singled to score a run in the fourth inning.

Payton Erickson took the loss on the mound, while Phillips finished the game in the circle for the T-Birds. Erickson allowed 15 hits and three walks while striking out two batters. Phillips allowed no hits, two walks and had no strikeouts as the T-Birds fell to 0-2 on the season.

Johnson, Phillips and Karina Welch each had two of the T-Birds’ nine hits.

The junior varsity team split a pair of games, losing to Weyauwega-Fremont 4-3 Tuesday, April 3, while beating Bonduel 32-0 April 5.

IOLA – The T-Birds took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Weyauwega-Fremont outscored the Thunderbirds 4-1 the rest of the way.

Pitcher Brianne Huettner allowed eight hits and one walk while striking out 11 batters. She also led the T-Birds offensively with two hits. Denisha Erno added a double and Emily Bonikowske singled.

I-S 32, Bonduel 0

BONDUEL – After going scoreless in the first inning, the T-Birds scored in each of the remaining four innings. The game was stopped after the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.

Huettner tossed a no-hitter to get the win on the mound. She gave up five walks and struck out 13.

Sophie Erdmann had six of her team’s 18 hits, including three triples and a double; Natasha Buster’s four hits included a double; Huettner had three hits, including a triple; Lindsey Bloom and Jessica Faldet each had two hits; and Erno had a single.

The varsity team will host Stevens Point Pacelli today (Thursday, April 12), while the JV squad will travel to Pacelli. First pitch for both games is set for 4:30 p.m.

The varsity team will play in the Stratford Invitational Saturday, April 14. The T-Birds will play Stratford at 10 a.m. and Antigo or Greenwood at 12:30 p.m. The T-Birds will also host Manawa Monday, April 16; Rosholt Tuesday, April 17; and Amherst Thursday, April 19. The junior varsity team will play at Amherst April 19. The games against Manawa, Rosholt and Amherst will start at 4:30 p.m.
