FNLPM kick off Spring Membership Drive

Friends of the New London Public Museum (FNLPM) recently kicked off its 2012 Spring Membership Drive with the announcement of a special incentive: new members who join between April 23 and May 23 will receive a free heirloom pepper or tomato plant.

The heirloom plants are being donated by Lyn and Donna Swanson of Peppers From Around the World, located west of New London on Hathorne Road.

In general terms, heirloom plants are those that are open-pollinated and originally grown in an earlier era. Some heirlooms are hundreds of years old, and others originated around the turn of the 20th century. New FNLPM members will receive a postcard that they can redeem at Plants From Around the World for their free heirloom pepper or tomato plant. Current FNLPM members are also receiving a postcard in the mail, as a thank you for their support.

“Every heirloom has a story behind it, and Lyn loves sharing these stories,” explains FNLPM board member, Brenda Hansen. “So you’ll not only get a free plant when you join the Friends, you’ll enjoy a bit of history too-as an added bonus.”

FNLPM’s primary source of funding is though charitable contributions to its membership program. The 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was formed to provide auxiliary funding for the needs and programs of the New London Public Museum, beyond its day to day operations.

FNLPM recently granted $1,500 to the Museum to underwrite the cost of a new “Curiosity Corner”-a permanent feature that will provide an opportunity for guests to interact with the Museum’s collections in a more meaningful way. “We introduced our membership program only a year ago, and we were already able to make our first grant to the Museum this past February,” said Hansen. “As our membership support continues to grow, we will be able to help the Museum in a greater way with the preservation of its collections, new exhibits, additional community educational programs, and other needs.”

FNLPM memberships start at $25 for individuals and $40 for families. Additional levels of support are also available, and all membership support is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Members also enjoy benefits including advance notice of exhibits and programs, reduced admission for select Museum events, member rates on FNLPM bus trips, and Time Travelers reciprocal benefits such as free or discounted admission at over 200 museums and historical sites nationwide.
