Comets split with Xavier, shut out W-F

Waupaca and Appleton Xavier split an Eastern Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday, May 5.

The Comets defeated the Hawks 9-3 in the first game, but Xavier came back with a 6-5 win in the second game.

Waupaca also handed Weyauwega-Fremont a 10-0 nonconference defeat Tuesday, May 1.

Waupaca 9, Xavier 3

A four-run fifth inning gave the Comets all the runs they needed.

Waupaca opened the scoring with a run in the second inning, but Xavier tied the game in the third and took a 3-1 lead after scoring runs in the fourth and fifth.

Beau Ash drove in Kevin Moe with the game-winning run in the fifth before the Comets added four more runs in the sixth.

Ash, Moe, Alex Hoffman and winning pitcher Seth Deuman each had two of Waupaca’s 10 hits in the game.

Waupaca took a 5-0 lead with a run in the first and four more in the second, but Xavier countered with three runs in the third and three more in the sixth.

Chase DeValk drove in Xavier’s runs in the third with a double and Tanner LeNoble knocked in two more with a double in the sixth.

Moe and Josh Houtman each had three of Waupaca’s nine hits.

Waupaca 10, W-F 0

The Comets scored three runs in the third and fourth, two in the second and one in the first and fifth in a win over the Indians.

Ash had three of Waupaca’s nine hits, while Hoffman and Zander Neuville added two each. Winning pitcher Joe Nelson held W-F to two hits.

Waupaca is off until the Comets host Berlin at 4:45 p.m. Monday, May 14.
