Marshfield edges Comets in championship game

The Waupaca girls’ varsity soccer team allowed only one goal during its three games of the Waupaca Invitational.

Unfortunately for the Comets, the goal came during a 1-0 loss to Marshfield Saturday, May 12, in the tournament’s championship game.

Waupaca also picked up wins over North Fond du Lac and Kingsford, Mich.

Waupaca 4, North Fond du Lac 0

Waupaca opened the eight-team tournament by scoring a pair of goals in each half. Lizzie Hanke scored both goals in the first half off of assists from Karissa Smith and Maleva Butkiewicz. Mikaila Johnson found the net in the second half off of an assist from Hanke and Alyssa Nicewander scored off of an assist from Josee Waitrovich.

Waupaca 2, Kingsford, Mich. 0

Johnson scored twice in the second half off of assists from Smith and Hanke.

Marshfield 1, Waupaca 0

Marshfield’s Darian Molter broke a scoreless tie at the 40-minute mark with an unassisted goal.

The Tigers outshot the Comets 8-4 and Marshfield goalkeeper Jala Zahn was named the most valuable player for not allowing a goal in three games.

Waupaca returned to Eastern Valley Conference play Tuesday, May 15, at Appleton Xavier. Waupaca will also head to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption Friday, May 18, for a 4:30 p.m. nonconference game.
