Lady Wolves fall to I-S in 13 innings

It took 13 innings, but Manawa suffered a tough loss against Iola-Sandinavia, 3-2 on Thursday, May 10.

Payton Erickson scored on a double by Kylie Johnson in the top of the 13 inning to give the Thunderbirds a 3-2 lead. The T-Birds held the Wolves in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Pitchers Payton Erickson and Ansley Block were locked in a pitchers’ duel as they each pitched the complete game. Erickson allowed nine hits, no walks while striking out seven batters in the win. Block allowed 11 hits, two walks while striking out 16 batters in the loss.

Manawa scored a run in the second and third innings. Iola-Scandinavia tied the score, 2-2, with a run each in the third and fourth innings. The Thunderbird left 14 runners on base while the Wolves left nine runners on base for the game.

Manawa had a chance to win it in the bottom of the eighth inning with a runner on third with only one out. Kali Draeger singled to lead off the inning and eventually advanced to third on a groundout by Ansley Block. Kim Retzke hit a groundball to Karina Welch at first base who threw home to catcher Jane Oligney to get Draeger out on a close play at home.
