Local athletes named all conference

Five area softball players – two from Iola-Scandinavia and Weyauwega-Fremont and one from Amherst – have been named to the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference All-Conference Team.

I-S freshmen Brooke Phillips and Kylie Johnson were named to the first team as an outfielder and third baseman, respectively; W-F juniors Kelsey Akey and Teal Tomaszewski made the first team as a pitcher and center fielder, respectively; and Amherst senior McKenna Johnson made the first team at shortstop.

Second-teamers include Iola-Scandinavia freshman Jane Oligney (catcher); Weyauwega-Fremont juniors Macey Schoenick (shortstop) and Mariah Hulbert (catcher); and Amherst senior Camber Sannes (second base).

Players receiving honorable mention include W-F junior Anna Forslin (second base), W-F sophomore Kori Looker (third base), Amherst senior Cassy McCarthy (center field/catcher), Amherst junior Jess Torrey (first base/pitcher), Amherst junior Marisa Loken (center field/catcher) and Amherst sophomore Mikayla Dombrowski (pitcher/center field).

“It was nice to have three of our players recognized as all-conference players by the other coaches,” I-S coach Tom Anderson said. “They each had solid performances in all 14 games against our conference opponents. With all three being freshmen, they are certainly very talented and skilled, but they each have a tremendous amount of room for improvement, especially with their mental approach to practices and games. I look forward to see how each of them develops.”

Phillips batted .500 in conference games, had a .590 on-base percentage and a .940 slugging percentage. Her 25 hits and 17 RBIs included seven doubles, three triples and three home runs.

The Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association named Phillips to the all-state third team. She was also selected to the North-Central All-District first team and finished the season with a .528 batting average, an .806 on-base percentage and a .953 slugging percentage. Her 44 hits during the season included six home runs, three triples and 10 doubles.

Johnson sported a .452 batting average, a .540 on-base percentage and a .623 slugging percentage in CWC-8 games. She had 24 hits, including six doubles and one home run and drove in seven runs.
