Hanson, Mildred K.

Mildred (Millie) K. Hanson, 89, of Iola, died Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Iola Living Assistance. Millie was born in Egg Harbor, WI on October 23, 1922 to the late Albert and Ruth (Ferris) Meyer. She was a 1939 graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School, where she excelled as a violinist in the orchestra. During the years of World War II and after, Millie went to work in shipyards in Sturgeon Bay and at Cutler Hammer in Milwaukee, one of many women of her generation who contributed to the war effort at home by working in our nations factories. With her father ailing, she returned to Sturgeon Bay, where she found employment at Amity Leather. In the early 50s, her brother-in-law, Eugene Henke, introduced her to a nice man who worked for him at the Midland Cooperative in Waupaca, WI and that man, Myron C. Hanson became her beloved husband of 56 years. They married on June 23, 1956 at Farmington Lutheran Church and raised three children on their farm near Amherst. Millie enjoyed her simple life as wife, mother and farmer. She was a member of the Woodland Homemakers, a 4-H leader for the General Pipers 4-H Club and was one of the Farmington Lutheran Church Quilters. She found great enjoyment in caring for her large vegetable and flower gardens, holiday baking, cheering for the Green Bay Packers, and reading. She is survived by her husband, Myron C. Hanson, Iola; sister, Margery (Eugene) Henke, Spring Valley; daughter, Patricia (Curtis) Martin, Madison; daughter-in-law Ginger (John) Hanson, Waldo; grandchildren: Sydney Martin, Max Martin, Wesley Hanson, Spencer Hanson and Nicole (Nicholas) Suemnicht Polster, four sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews. Millie was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Roger Meyer; her sons, Robert D. and John W. Hanson and her brother-in-law, Eugene Henke. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at Farmington Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Sabin officiating. Friends and family may gather on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at church. Interment will be in the church cemetery following the service. Donations may be made in Millie’s memory to the Farmington Lutheran Church or Iola Living Assistance. Her family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Iola Living Assistance for the loving care they gave Millie, Marcia and Mark Sabin and the Maple Crest Funeral Home for their assistance with arrangements. “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Mother Teresa
