?Racing for a Reason? set for August 18 at Shawano Speedway

We needed the rain, and it fell, at least on Shawano Speedway, during the second feature event of the night. The rain lasted only about 10 minutes, but it was enough to force the cancellation of the rest of the racing program.

Of the features that were raced, Joel Bennett won again in the FASTRAK Late Model division after receiving a gift from Jeff Curtin. Curtin was in control of the race when, with only a couple laps remaining, he almost spun out by himself in corner four. This allowed Bennett to close the gap and take the lead and the win. Curtin recovered to finish second.

Joel Bennett’s dad, 78 year old Bobby Bennett, was back in a race car Saturday night. He raced in the FASTRAK Late Model division and finished ninth in the feature.

Brandon Czarapata won the rain-shortened IMCA Stock Car feature.

Since most of the features were rained out, I’d like to devote some of this column writing a few words about an upcoming special night planned for Shawano Speedway. Mark your calendars for August 18, which will be “Racing for a Reason” Night at Shawano Speedway for Childhood Cancer Awareness.

The Speedway did a cancer awareness night last year and it was a success. From all indications so far, this year’s event is going to be unbelievable. Donations are currently coming in and include racing and non-racing items. Some items will be raffled off, while others will be available via a silent auction.

I will try to get a list of auction items listed in this column before Aug. 18. Based on some of the items I have heard about so far, if you are a racing memorabilia collector, especially of local racers, you will want to be at the races that night because there will be plenty of memorabilia available.

All money raised that night from the auctions, raffles and other items sold will be donated to H.E.A.L. of Red River and Child Life Services of St. Vincent’s Hospital.

The countdown continues until the World of Outlaws Dirt Late Model Series returns to Shawano Speedway on Wednesday, Aug. 1.

Voting will continue for the Shawano Fans Fund drivers through Saturday, July 21. You can go to Facebook and search under Shawano Fans Fund to learn how to make a donation to help get more drivers to the race.

In next week’s column I will supply you with all the facts and figures you will need to know before the big event arrives. It should be a good one.
