Golfers to open at Seymour

By the time school starts in three weeks, the Waupaca girls’ golf team will already have more than half of its season in the books.

New coach Brandon Temperly had only five golfers show up Aug. 6 for the team’s first practice at the Waupaca Country Club, but that’s enough to field a varsity team.

“I’m just getting to know the kids and their golf game,” said Temperly, also the girls’ basketball coach at Waupaca High School. “My first goal is to have them learn something every day and improve on something every day.”

The Comets won’t have much time to practice before the season opens, as the team will head to Seymour’s Crystal Springs Golf Course Friday, Aug. 10, for the Seymour Invitational.

“The hard part is we’re opening with an 18-hole invitational,” Temperly said. “I don’t know if all of the girls have played 18 holes at one time.”

The roster includes seniors Robin Peeters and Jessica Krawczyk; junior Jayne Barber; and sophomore Charlotte Bergsbaken.

“These seniors have been around and we’re going to lean on them,” Temperly said. “They have a strong ability to compete and they have a good opportunity to finish high in the conference. We have four girls that have a good amount of experience and one that’s just learning. One girl works at the Country Club, so she’s there all the time. Robin played a lot of golf this year at the Country Club and two others played a lot at Hidden Waters.”

The Comets will compete with Appleton Xavier, Bonduel, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute and Wrightstown in the Eastern Valley Conference. Besides a handful of invitationals, each team will attend seven conference meets. Waupaca will host an EVC meet Tuesday, Aug. 21.

“I like that,” Temperly said. “You can see how everybody’s doing. Everybody’s competing in the same elements and the same conditions.”

The Comets will also host an eight-team invitational at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Waupaca Country Club. FVL, Freedom, Little Chute, Green Bay Notre Dame, Oconto, Wrightstown and Xavier are scheduled to attend.

In the meantime, the Comets have their sights set on Friday’s match in Seymour.

“We want the girls to be ready for a match and know the rules,” Temperly said. “Once we get past the first week, it’s go, go, go. The hardest thing is to get that first match under your belt.”
