I-S computer project meets goal

Iola-Scandinavia high school students will be starting out the school year with laptops, thanks to efforts by high school science teacher Bill Lund.

“We have about $78,000 in the bank and with additional promises of funding, we will make our goal,” Lund said at the Aug. 13 I-S School board meeting.

“This has been a big project this summer. We have had four students working together with Mr. Lund and Heartland, imaging the computers,” said Sara Anderson, the high school principal. “Additional students will be trained to be our ‘Geek Squad,’ and act as our help desk for the other students. They will know how to do a good share of the behind the scenes stuff.”

Anderson also gave credit to the maintenance staff for their help on the project.

Carl Hansen addressed the school board with his concerns over bullying within the school.

“I have two kids in the school and both of them have been the victim of bullying at one time or another. We have been told that at this age, kids behave like that,” hansen said. “You don’t know how kids are going to react.”

Hansen commended the middle school for getting together and brainstorming on how to handle issues on bullying.

Tess Lecy-Wojcik, elementary principal, told Hansen that she, Sara Anderson and Cathy Rocco will be attending a safe school seminar soon and apologized to Hansen for any problems.

In other business, contracts were approved for Duane Braun as interim district administrator, Erin Bonikowske as fourth-grade teacher and Bethany Nelson for high school math. Nelson was also approved as assistant track and cross country coach.

Julie Prahl was approved as freshman volleyball coach, Rebecca Robillard as JV volleyball coach and Nathan Schustek as middle school volleyball coach.
