Fremont adopts low-speed vehicle ordinance

Village residents can now legally drive low-speed vehicles on the streets in Fremont.

But, golf carts continue to be illegal to drive on village streets, unless they are retrofitted to become low-speed vehicles.

The village board, at its regular meeting this month, approved an ordinance that allows low-speed vehicles on village streets.

“It has to be registered with the (Wisconsin) Department of Transportation as low speed,” Village Clerk Karen Looker said.

In addition to being registered, the vehicle must have such things as seatbelts and lights can not exceed 35 mph.

Low-speed vehicles are allowed on village streets but are not allowed on highways or to cross highways, she said.

Developing a low-speed vehicle ordinance for the village became a topic of discussion this summer after it was noted that some residents were driving golf carts on village streets.
