Thunderbirds shut out Hornets

A pair of first-quarter touchdowns and a stingy defense added up to a season-opening win for the Iola-Scandinavia football team.

Jake Hansen scored from 6 yards out and Holdyn Mast and Andrew Bauer teamed up for a 56-yard touchdown pass in the Thunderbirds’ 22-0 win over Rosholt Aug. 24 at Thunderbird Field in Scandinavia.

Brady Huettner added a 3-yard touchdown and a safety in the fourth quarter.

The T-Birds had a 292-109 advantage on the ground. Huettner led the I-S rushing game with 80 yards on 13 carries, while Nick Wavruk aded 69 yards. Rosholt’s Owen Neff led all rushers with 101 yards, but no other Hornet rusher finished with more than 8.

Mast completed three of seven passes for 68 yards, while Jarod Richter and Caleb Bembenek combined to complete six of 14 passes for 53 yards for the Hornets.

The T-Birds will open Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at Weyauwega-Fremont. The Indians also pitched a shutout in their opener, 42-0 over Algoma.
