Lots of locks donated with love

Hana Buttles started the new school year with a new hairstyle after donating 15 inches of her hair to Locks of Love.

“No one has really seen it yet,” she said. “A lot of people thought that I would never go through with it. I think some of them even had bets on when I would get it done.”

Carol Koon, of Organic Hair Studio in Waupaca, cut Buttles’ hair.

“This is the longest that my hair has ever been,” said the 14-year-old girl.

The daughter of Phil and Cindy Buttles, of Scandinavia, explained why she decided to donate hair to Locks of Love.

My Aunt Dawn has donated twice over the years, and I felt that it was just time for me to get a haircut. Giving it to Locks of Love is a

great way to help other people lead a more normal life,” she said.

Buttles explained that her Grandpa Bernie, who had cancer and recently passed away, also had an influence on her decision to donate.

“I had fully committed to getting my hair cut before he passed away,” she said. “He passed away before I had it done, but I know he would have been proud of me.”

In order to donate to Locks of Love one must have at least 10 inches of hair.

“I had enough hair that I could have donated twice,” Buttles said. “But, I don’t want my hair to ever be shorter than shoulder length.”

Her hair still reaches to the middle of her back.

“Prior to this, I have only had my hair trimmed,” she said. “Well, except for the time my brother cut my hair for me.”

Her mother said, “The only other haircut she ever really had was when she was 2 years old. Cody, who was 4 at the time, cut off four inches of her hair. Not only did he cut it off, he threw it behind the couch, so no one would know.”
