Fueling a great cause in Waupaca County

A local fuel company is teaming up with the American Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF) to help fund breast cancer research.

Offering commercial fuels, equipment and repair services, Charter Fuels is pledging to donate a portion of the profits its special propane delivery truck – adorned with a pink ribbon and hue – collects during the next several months.

In its fourth year, the pink propane truck came to the delivery route of the Waupaca branch in July.

“We have six branches throughout the state of Wisconsin,” said LuAnne Pink, owner of Charter Fuels with husband Doug. “Each year, the truck is moved. The proceeds we donate help raise money and awareness about breast cancer and early detection.”

LuAnne said the decision to donate to the organization came from personal experiences with the disease.

“We have family members and employees with family members who have

been affected by breast cancer. It affects many of our customers. I feel it’s a very worthwhile cause,” she said.

The pink truck has other roots in the industry as well, she explained.

What Charter Fuels donates depends on the volume of what the truck delivers in a 12-month period to the service area.

“It came here July 1, and the plan is to have it here until next summer,” said Mike Kempf, branch lead for Charter Fuels in Waupaca.

He said that anyone who needs to purchase propane, whether for agricultural, business or personal use, can request the pink truck to participate in the program and help the cause.

Over the last four years, Charter Fuels has been able to donate up to $5,000 each year for ABCF.

The foundation, according to its website at www.abcf.org, provides financial assistance for breast cancer screenings and diagnostic tests for uninsured and underserved individuals, regardless of age or gender.

More than 50 percent of those who receive funding assistance from ABCF are already symptomatic, the organization stated.

In addition, ABCF distributes breast cancer information.

It also maintains partnerships with medical clinics in metropolitan areas by funding breast cancer screenings to provide reduced-fee breast cancer screenings to ABCF-funded patients.

Each donation allows the organization to continue to partner with medical clinics across the nation to provide affordable breast cancer screening and treatment services, further reduce screening and treatment costs for those in need and increase the number of people who will receive funding assistance toward the provision of screening and diagnostic testing.
