Waupaca girls fall to New London, Clintonville

Upsetting a two-time defending state champion was not in the cards for the Waupaca girls’ basketball team.

Neither was knocking off a team with one win.

New London improved to 11-0 on the season Jan. 12 with a 52-20 win over the Comets, while Waupaca dropped a 44-40 Eastern Valley Conference game Jan. 10 at Clintonville.

WAUPACA – The Bulldogs held the Comets to two points in the first quarter and no more than eight in the second, third and fourth frames to pick up the nonconference win.

The Bulldogs led 19-2 after one quarter, 34-10 at halftime and 45-14 after three quarters before outscoring the Comets 7-6 over the final eight minutes.

Courtney Schmidt led Waupaca with seven points, while Brenna Heise had 19 to lead New London.

Clintonville 44, Waupaca 40

CLINTONVILLE – The Truckers came into the game with a 1-9 record and were shut out in the first quarter, but roared back with 25 points in the fourth quarter.

Waupaca outscored the home team 10-0 in the first quarter and led 21-14 at halftime and 29-19 after three quarters, but were outscored 25-11 in the fourth.

The Comets turned the ball over 29 times, with 24 of them coming on steals.

Mikaila Johnson led Waupaca with 10 points, while Allison Shepard led the Truckers with 11.

The Comets will host Little Chute Friday, Jan. 18, before hosting Green Bay Southwest Tuesday, Jan. 22, in a rescheduled nonconference game. Tipoff for both games is set for 7:15 p.m.
