Police stop burglary at Fleet Farm

Waupaca police arrested a man suspected of breaking into Fleet Farm and attempting to steal weapons.

Shortly before midnight Thursday, Jan. 24, city police and county deputies responded to a motion alarm at the store in Waupaca. When he arrived at the scene, Waupaca Police Sgt. Mario Graceffa saw a man wearing sunglasses and a bandana over his face walking outside the store. The man was also carrying a backpack.

According to police, Graceffa ordered the man to stop and drop the backpack. The man refused to comply and took off running. Graceffa and Officer Brent Krueger pursued and caught him and took the man to jail for questioning.

He was subsequently identified as Joseph O. Holtane, 34, Waupaca.

Investigators at the scene found damage to the building due to forced entry and damage in the store as a result of an attempt to steal firearms and fishing gear. Outside the building, police found two long guns.

In October 2012, Holtane was charged with theft and possession of narcotics as a repeat offender. He was released on a $2,000 signature bond with the condition that he not commit any crimes.

Holtane’s prior convictions include obtaining prescription drugs by fraud in April 2007, criminal damage to property in November 2007 and of possession of marijuana in March 2010,,

Due to a prior felony conviction, Holtane is prohibited from possessing any firearms.
