Chain O? Lakes featured on TV show

Around the Corner with John McGivern will feature Waupaca’s Chain O’Lakes when it airs at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, on Milwaukee Public Television.

In the show’s fourth episode, McGivern visits with local businesses, camps, residents and visitors showing some of the many things to see and do in the Waupaca area.

Some of the businesses featured include Clear Water Harbor aboard the Chief Waupaca, Wild West Campground & Corral, Ding’s Dock and The Secret Garden Cafe. John also spends a day at Camp Onaway with the Boys & Girls Brigade, a stop in the historic Village of Rural and an afternoon touring the Wisconsin Veterans Homeint King.

“Being featured in an episode of Around the Corner with John McGivern is a great opportunity to promote the Waupaca area to potential visitors in Milwaukee and around the state,” said Jeff Anderson, tourism director with the Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce.

The show’s crew spent a week in Waupaca in late July to complete the filming of the episode which is part of a thirteen show series. Around the Corner with John McGivern is in its second season and Waupaca is one of a handful of communities in the state to be featured from outside of South Eastern Wisconsin.

The producers were drawn to Waupaca during filming in Neenah where they connected with the Boys & Girls Brigade and learned of their camp on the Chain O’ Lakes, Camp Onaway. McGivern also spent summers as a youth in the Waupaca area so the episode draws on some of his childhood memories of the area.

Although he acknowledges that to many people Waupaca is not considered northern Wisconsin, to him the area is and always will be his “Up North.”
