10th ranked Bonduel takes down Manawa

The 10th-ranked Bonduel Bears defeated the Manawa Wolves on Parents’ Night, Thursday, Jan. 24.

The Wolves were behind 27-0 until senior Jacob Frenche put the Wolves on the board with a dramatic pin in the second period. The senior was down 4-0, but caught Tyler Cina in a chin throw to pick up the pin in his last dual meet in a Manawa singlet.

“Jacob has been wrestling well the last few weeks. He wants to finish his final season on a strong note and is doing everything in his power for that to happen,” said Head Coach, Scott Hahn.

Manawa did not get back on the scoring side until the 152 lbs. weight class, when Garret Griffin snuck out a close 9-5 victory. Griffin scored a takedown at the end to secure the win.

Joe VandeVrede (182 lbs.) and Casey Johnson finished the night with wins for Manawa.

Manawa wrestlers travel to Oconto on Thursday, Jan. 31. The team then travels to Plainfield for the CWC Conference Wrestling tournament Saturday, Feb. 2.

Manawa has not had a conference champion in four years and is hoping that changes this year.

“Having a conference champ is part of building a program,” said Hahn. “It is an expectation that happens every year. This year our conference has 22 ranked kids in the state, so every championship will be earned.”
